Progress Reports on The Quality of Public Education in Canada

The Learning Partnership has created a series of progress reports entitled, “The Quality of Public Education in Canada” as a means of drawing parents and the wider public into an important national conversation about education in Canada. They are designed to identify areas in which we are doing well, where we should be doing better and the role each of us can play in providing the best public education possible for our children.

Resilience

This report is the product of a partnership between eight provinces and territories, the Canadian Council on Learning and The Learning Partnership. As a result of our focus on students at risk at a national conference in 2006, The Learning Partnership mobilized regional roundtable discussions in Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland on the topic of resilience. The information shared culminated in an exciting national conference in Winnipeg in November of 2008, the National Dialogue on Resilience in Youth. This process has brought many voices and perspectives together to enrich our understanding about developing resilience in youth.

Early Learning

This Progress Report, the fourth in a continuing series, aims to increase awareness among Canadians about the importance of early learning and about what we can do to support families to raise children who are ready for school. The report discusses where we are in Canada with regard to early learning and includes exemplary practices as well as suggestions for action for parents, communities, educators and governments.

Demographics

This Progress Report, the third in a continuing series, aims to raise awareness among Canadians of the impact demographic changes are having, and will have, on our public schools and society in Canada. The report is the culmination of The Learning Partnership’s national engagement project on demographic changes in Canada and their impact on public education.

Students At Risk

This Progress Report, the second in a continuing series, aims to raise awareness among Canadians about “Who is at risk?” While most Canadian students are doing quite well on international tests, there are a number of students who aren’t making the grade. This achievement gap should be a concern for all Canadians.

Measuring Success

This Progress Report, the first in a continuing series, aims to raise awareness among Canadians about measuring student achievement. In this report, we discuss three testing programs that tell us how Canadian students are doing. They provide comparative information on how students are performing over time, in different parts of the country, and how they compare to students in other countries. All three sets of tests measure student achievement at key grades and age groups in core subjects.
