Research shows that parent engagement in the early stages of a child’s education has a significant impact on children’s academic performance and developmental growth.
So how do we involve parents? The Learning Partnership does this through our Welcome to Kindergarten program, which teaches parents activities to do with their child to prepare them for kindergarten. But what about on a larger scale?
On May 13, 2014 in Winnipeg, The Learning Partnership will host its second Early Years Family and Community Engagement Symposium to explore how to put research into practice and take action. Held in Winnipeg, the symposium continues the journey started last year in Toronto and looks at early learning engagement strategies that are possible to implement in different communities.
The Early Years Family and Community Engagement Symposium is one way The Learning Partnership brings together practitioners from various provinces to share best practices and generate important discussions on how to enhance family and community engagement for school-age children in this country. Such practitioners include Early Years Educators, School/District Administrators, Teachers, Family Development Workers, Family Resource Program Staff, Researchers, Early Years Centres, Community Agencies and other practitioners supporting young children and their families.
The symposium features early years experts from across Canada on various topics including: family and community engagement; the contribution of research to the value of early years; and, the difference of early literacy and numeracy in school.

The Early Years Family and Community Engagement Symposium will take place May 13-15, 2014 at The Fort Garry Hotel, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
