Take Our Kids to Work Day: CBRE builds advantage by nurturing next gen real estate leaders

Since our company’s founding 36 years ago, CBRE Canada has committed to championing young talent and shaping real estate’s future leaders. Take Our Kids to Work Day is a wonderful initiative we’re proud to be participating in for another year.

It fits perfectly with CBRE’s entrepreneurial, family-oriented corporate culture.

Our company’s founders believed in putting faith in the next generation, giving young talent guidance, mentorship and the opportunity to accelerate their careers, in turn helping our company grow and thrive. To this day, supporting younger generations remains a core part of CBRE’s culture.

So we’re delighted to be involved with Take Our Kids to Work Day; we think it’s never too early to instill in younger generations an appreciation for the potential of real estate, an industry that’s literally building the world of tomorrow.

We talk a lot about the CBRE Family, the idea that all our employees are connected and care about one another, even if we’re also highly entrepreneurial. By pushing each other to new heights, we reinforce our position as the world’s leading real estate services firm.

Take Our Kids to Work Day expands on this notion of family and allows children to better understand their parents, while underscoring the value of hard work. And, if after observing their parents at CBRE for a day, these kids decide they want to join the CBRE family business? Even better.

We’ve found the best way to approach Take Our Kids to Work Day is to offer exposure to the diversity of our service offering. Our program introduces kids to the world of real estate and the skills required to work in the business, whether it’s in office leasing, capital markets or real estate marketing. Activities include a tour of a Toronto courthouse – Infrastructure Ontario is a CBRE client – where students will meet a Supreme Court judge, followed by a visit to Osgoode Hall law school. Real estate provides an entry point to so many varied interests!

This is not the only way CBRE Canada nurtures tomorrow’s real estate leaders. Each year we hire 45 co-op and summer students, then host our Brokerage Summer School, inviting interns – ours and those of our clients – to our Downtown Toronto office for an afternoon of networking and learning about commercial real estate and brokerage.

Our support for future industry leaders is underscored by the newly introduced CBRE Founders Award, which recognizes top performing summer student at CBRE. Each year, a $1,500 bursary and support for future employment will be awarded to two summer interns or co-op students, to help with educational expenses and propel their real estate careers. Winners will best embody the entrepreneurial zeal of CBRE Canada’s founders, championing new ideas and bringing energy and collaboration to teams around them.

Whether it’s Take Our Kids to Work Day, Brokerage Summer School, or the CBRE Founders Award, CBRE Canada takes great pride in providing young talent the support they need to get a jump start on building successful careers—hopefully in the dynamic world of real estate!

This blog post is part of a series in the lead up to Take Our Kids to Work Day occuring on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.  Take Our Kids to Work Day is an annual event where students step into their future for a day and get a glimpse into the working world. The day involves students in Grade 9 and Secondary III (Québec) spending the day in the workplace of a parent, relative, friend or volunteer host, where they experience and learn about the world of work. Workplaces can register online here.
