Coding Quest Sampler answers the urgent need for remote teaching tools during COVID-19

The Learning Partnership is delighted to release a new program offering, Coding Quest Sampler, which addresses the urgent need for flexible, project-based learning that can be delivered remotely during the time of COVID-19.

An abridged version of the Coding Quest program, Coding Quest Sampler introduces teachers and students (Grades 4 – 8) to simple coding activities and gives students the tools to build their own computer game story.

Coding Quest Sampler offers a scaffolded introduction to coding ideal as an introduction for an entire class or as an extension for independent learners,” says Valia Reinsalu, Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School teacher, former Toronto District School Board digital learning lead, and an early reviewer of the Sampler. “Even for those teachers unfamiliar with coding, the program is structured, clear, organized and easy to teach. Each lesson plan has a slide show and links, practical tutorials, and a rubric to guide the delivery of global competencies.”

With its focus on problem solving and its multimodal, responsive feedback characteristics, Coding Quest Sampler accommodates a range of student learning styles and individual interests. “Importantly, Coding Quest Sampler – like Coding Quest – provides an open-ended structure that aligns well with the current need to focus on core curricula. It offers clear ties to the literacy, language arts and math curricula. We believe teachers will find this resource particularly helpful as they adapt to the new realities of teaching remotely during the coronavirus pandemic and whatever follows,” says Jackie Young, national director of programming for The Learning Partnership.

Coding Quest Sampler is available at no cost to educators and schools across Canada with local program manager support for implementation. The program works across a variety of devices (iPads, Chromebooks and laptops) and students are not required to install any software.
