Pavita Phonsavath, Deloitte Canada

Job Title

Supervisor

Skills I rely on most in my job:

Communication, collaboration, problem solving, taking initiative

Question from a student in Sherwood Park, AB

What are some of your major responsibilities as someone who works at a consulting firm? What kind of education do you need? Do you enjoy your job?”

I manage 20 to 25 people across Canada and have to adjust my management style for each person, as they are different individuals with different goals and aspirations. I am responsible to hire, interview, lead and assign projects, and lead teams through different deadlines (we have about 7 to 8 major tax deadlines a year).

Collaboration and teamwork is a big part of my day-to-day role and I would not be successful without a team. I also communicate with people across Canada and India, where you need to ensure you are communicating effectively.

I went to the University of Saskatchewan to be a social worker. In my last year, I attended the practicum and realized I did not want to be a social worker. I didn’t want to waste the time I spent in university so I finished school with a sociology degree. Throughout university, I worked part-time with a telecommunications company where I starting to enjoy working with people, sales and marketing.

I ended up working there for eight years growing into a manager, I moved onto working at PepsiCo Beverages and back to the telecommunications company.

Throughout this time, I made the best use of my time to learn as much as I could. I developed myself professionally and connected with many people via LinkedIn. I was eventually laid off due to a reorganization of the company but was headhunted through a recruiter at Deloitte the same year.

I really enjoy my current job as no day is ever the same. The learning never ends and I make an impact every day. Deloitte also encourages work-life balance where our mental health is the number one priority. I also love that Deloitte allows me to volunteer my time at work, like I am right now. Based on my experience, life is unexpected but you have to make the best of it.
