Question from Serena, Toronto, ON
“What kind of jobs are related to the technology field now and how will this change 10 to 20 years from now?”
That’s a good question and something certainly top of mind in the industry and the general market.
Outside of developing products and services, there are lots of jobs focused on support/services, sales, and marketing. In fact, I fall within that sales bucket but it’s quite different from what you may imagine.
Being a salesperson in technology is almost like you’re paving the way for the future. Most businesses are interested in modernizing their operations, client interaction, product development, and employee retention through technology. As such, I don’t see myself “selling” but helping them achieve their vision which will ultimately have impact on society as a whole.
In 10 to 20 years, I don’t think we’ll view tech as its own industry but something embedded everywhere. For that reason, I believe that the roles you’ll see will be much more focused on critical thinking
versus doing manual labour.
It’ll be important to understand the whats and the whys behind your products today because the future will require you to interact with intelligent systems and provide additional value to the business. Also, I don’t think sales, support, or consultation roles are going anywhere. The names may change but at the end, everyone needs help understanding what is available in the market!
