Question from Shirley, Hamiota, MB
“What exactly does a career in skilled trades mean, what type of stuff do you do?”
Hi, Shirley,
I want to start by saying thank you so much for your question. I believe by becoming a tradesperson, I have the opportunity to make an impact on people’s lives. As a tradesperson, I get a sense of accomplishment through helping others with a job that they wouldn’t be able to do on their own.
There’s a lot of variety in the world of skilled trades, and that can lead to so many opportunities. Tradespeople usually have lots of energy, work with their hands, work with tools, and provide some kind of service to the public. I believe the simple answer is: tradespeople add value to the world every single day, and that progress leads to happiness.
Our construction & maintenance team works on the overhead and underground powerlines in downtown Toronto. We climb poles, use bucket trucks, and also go into cable chambers to maintain and build the powerlines that supply our customers. We have an awesome team of skilled tradespeople that work together and we have a lot of fun.
As a team leader and tradesperson, my main focus is our team’s success, and whenever someone needs something, we stop what we’re doing and help. The work we do is like a team sport, and we do whatever it takes to be successful and enjoy our work.
Take care, Shirley, and live your life with passion, my friend.
Sincerely, William Graham
