Question from Brandon, Thornhill, ON

“I am interested in pursuing an engineering degree. What branch of engineering did you focus on? Any advice for me?”

Hi Brandon, thanks for your question. Back in the 1980s I was exposed to computers (and of course, games) and was fascinated by their capabilities. My pursuit to understand how they worked led me to study computer engineering at the University of Toronto. Fast forward to today, I now manage a small design team of eight engineers that develops circuitry enabling our customers’ chip to send data over wire at the speed of 10s of gigabites per second.

I have four tips for you:

  1. “Stay hungry, stay foolish.” – Steve Jobs, 2005, Stanford University
  2. “You can’t be afraid to fail. It’s the only way you succeed.” – Lebron James
  3. Immerse yourself in what you love in order to succeed
  4. Befriend like-minded people, so that you are not alone on the journey.
